Grace That Sets Us Free

DAY SIX

Let Go

There comes a point in prayer when we have said what we need to say and asked for what we need, yet still do not know what will happen. We may find ourselves returning again and again to the same questions, trying to imagine every possible outcome or wondering what we could do to make things turn out differently. This can be one of the hardest parts of trusting God. We want certainty. We want control. But faith asks us to trust God with what we cannot see or change. Mary knew this kind of trust. Her life was shaped by moments when she could not see what was coming next, yet she continued to say yes to God. Letting go does not mean giving up or pretending that something no longer matters. It means recognising what is not ours to control and choosing to place it in God’s hands. Let go.

TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART,
AND DO NOT RELY ON YOUR OWN INSIGHT.
IN ALL YOUR WAYS ACKNOWLEDGE HIM,
AND HE WILL MAKE STRAIGHT YOUR PATHS.
PROVERBS 3:5–6

Trust does not mean having all the answers. It means choosing to place ourselves in God’s hands when the answers are not yet clear.

YOUR INVITATION

Think about your knot and ask yourself: What am I trying to control that I cannot control?

It might be another person’s choices, the timing of an outcome, something that has already happened or something you cannot change. Name it. Then place it deliberately in God’s hands.

You might simply pray: Jesus, I give this to you.

If you find yourself taking it back again, don’t be discouraged. Letting go is often something we have to practise more than once.

PRAYING WITH MARY

Mary, help me let go of what I cannot control. When I find myself trying to manage every outcome, lead me back to Jesus. Teach me the trust you lived, the trust that says yes to God even without knowing the whole path. Guide me as I do what is mine to do and leave the rest with Him.

Mary, Untier of Knots, pray for us.

—

Hail, Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

WISDOM FROM THE CHURCH

Pray, hope, and don’t worry.
