Encounter. Discipleship. Mission

What if Sunday shaped our entire week?

The faith we celebrate in our parishes is meant to shape the whole of our lives and Sunday Eucharist stands at the heart of this reality. We are drawn into communion with Christ and with one another and nourished for the journey of discipleship and mission in the world.

But our relationship with God is not confined to Sunday worship.

God is just as present in the rhythms of our week, Mondays through to Saturdays, inviting us to bring our faith into how we care for our families and neighbours, approach our work, respond to those in need, and use our time and resources.

This then leads us to ask: How do we nurture the connection between the faith we celebrate and the lives we lead?

This is a key question as we consider the future of our parish communities. Knowing about the importance of prayer, Scripture and discipleship is not always the same as cultivating the habits that help us live our faith. Many of us want to grow closer to God, but can often struggle to find a rhythm that carries our faith into the everyday.

Over recent years, a number of parishes across our Archdiocese have seen the fruit of the Alpha Course in helping people explore the Christian faith, encounter Jesus and consider what it means to follow Him in everyday life. But we know that the journey of discipleship continues long after these courses have finished.

So how can we keep creating opportunities for our people to deepen their relationship with Jesus and grow in the practices that sustain a life of faith? What might help us make prayer a more regular part of our day? How might a deeper engagement with Scripture shape the way we hear the readings at Mass and live them throughout the week? And what could happen if Sunday became the spiritual centre of our week, shaping everything that follows?

These are the kinds of questions that have prompted a group of leaders within the Inner-North Catholic Community to take part in an eight-week pilot program using resources from Practicing the Way. Through weekly gatherings, these leaders are exploring ancient Christian understandings and practices that have sustained discipleship and mission for generations. They are also reflecting on how these might inform future formation initiatives and help shape a vision for spiritual renewal as the Inner-North communities move towards becoming a single parish entity later this year.

The aim of the pilot is to explore pathways that help people draw more deeply from our rich Catholic heritage, nurturing habits of prayer and discipleship that enable the grace celebrated in the Liturgy to bear fruit in everyday life. This does not occur solely through changes or improvements related to the Sunday celebration itself, but it also grows from intentionally forming hearts and habits outside our church buildings.

So then we might ask:

What could our parish communities become if the connection between worship and everyday life grew stronger?

The answer to this question will look different in every community. But the conversation itself could be a fruitful place to begin. If you would like support or guidance in exploring how Practicing the Way could enrich your community, please get in touch with us.
