Every Sunday, something extraordinary happens.
We gather. We listen to the Word of God. We sing. We pray. We bring our lives, including our joys, our struggles, our hopes and our disappointments before God. And at the heart of it all, we encounter Christ in the Eucharist.
We do this week after week. So familiar is the rhythm that it can be easy to forget just how much is happening when we celebrate the liturgy.
Perhaps that’s why it is worth stopping every now and then and asking: How well do we understand what we are doing? And how intentionally are we forming our communities to celebrate it?
Liturgical formation can sometimes sound like just another thing to add to an already-full parish calendar. But it is much more than that.
The liturgy is where the Church encounters Christ, is formed in faith and is sent into the world. It shapes who we are as a parish community. So investing in the liturgical formation of our people is not simply about getting the practical details right. It is about helping our communities enter more deeply into the mystery we celebrate.
And there are plenty of opportunities to do that.
Perhaps your parish has wonderful musicians who would love to explore more deeply what it means to lead the assembly in prayer. Perhaps your readers could benefit from reflecting on the privilege and responsibility of proclaiming the Word. Maybe your altar servers, sacristans or Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion would appreciate some practical formation.
Or perhaps the question is bigger.
What is the liturgical life of our parish saying about who we are and what we believe?
The Synodal Evangelisation Team in the Archdiocese offers liturgical formation and training for parishes, with opportunities ranging from practical ministry formation to deeper exploration of the Church’s liturgical life. The approach is flexible, because every parish is different.
It might be a single workshop, a series of sessions, ministry-specific training or a longer journey of formation and accompaniment. Formation can also bring neighbouring parishes together, creating opportunities to learn and reflect as a wider community.
The starting point is simply a conversation.
