Our Synodal Journey

WHERE WE'RE STANDING NOW
We have listened, discerned and are ready to take the next steps.
Synodality is about how we listen, discern and walk together as the Church. For us, this has meant creating space to hear from across the Archdiocese, to pray and reflect together, and to listen for where the Holy Spirit is leading us. We are now moving from listening towards action.
Our Year of Walking Together (2023) and Year of the Holy Spirit (2024) were pastoral invitations from the Archbishop to listen more deeply, discern together and recognise what the Spirit might be asking of us as an Archdiocese. Guided by the call to discern ‘what seems good to us and the Holy Spirit’ (Acts 15:29), we entered into the Jubilee Year of Hope (2025) with a renewed sense of what might be possible for our Church. And in 2026, the invitation to Get Up! Listen! Go! called us to move from discernment towards action, responding with courage and hope to what we had heard.
Grounded in the methodology of Conversations in the Spirit, our discernment has happened both in everyday life of our parishes and ministries, and through formal gatherings across the Archdiocese. These included our Roundtable series (2024), the First Archdiocesan Assembly (2024), local Parish Assemblies (2024–2026), Student Voice Discernment (2024 and 2026), as well as Conversations in the Spirit sessions (2026) with our migrant communities, ecclesial ministries and movements, and ecumenical partners.
Our Second Archdiocesan Assembly (2026) brought much of this listening and discernment together. From these many voices, a number of key themes have emerged. They are helping to shape our priorities and guide our next steps as an Archdiocese.

Encountering Jesus
Being a Church centred on Christ.
At the heart of our renewal is a deeper encounter with Jesus, especially through the Eucharist. We are called to create more opportunities for prayer, Eucharistic Adoration and liturgy that draws people into relationship with Christ. Renewal begins not simply with changing structures, but with allowing a personal encounter with Jesus to transform how we live, belong and participate in mission.

Our journey so far has shaped the direction we are now taking.
Our synodal journey has been shaped by the experiences, questions and hopes of our communities over time. Shortly, we will be making available reports that describe the key moments and reflections that have shaped our synodal story and laid foundations for the Church we are being called to build together.
WHERE TO FROM HERE
We remain attentive to what the Holy Spirit is asking of us.
As we look ahead, we are beginning to imagine what the themes and priorities emerging from our discernment might mean for the life and mission of our Archdiocese.
The Archbishop is prayerfully reflecting on what he senses the Holy Spirit may be inviting us to become and do in this next chapter. This vision will offer a direction for our shared journey, not as a finished blueprint, but an invitation to keep listening, discerning and responding together.
As this vision takes shape, we will explore what it might mean for our parishes, communities, ministries and the people we are called to serve.
